Sober Bars: A Rising Trend

You may not have heard of sober bars but you soon will! People in recovery are finding this setting to be a fun way to socialize.

What is the first word that comes to mind when someone mentions going to the bar? Most likely ‘alcohol’ or some other related word like ‘drinking’. People go to bars to drink and socialize, and alcohol has been considered a social lubricant for as long as it has been around. It is common for singles, couples, and groups to go out for a night and visit different bars and clubs and enjoy the scene. There is a group of people that this setting no longer fits–those in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction.

In recovery from alcoholism/addiction, we often find ourselves looking for new adventures to replace the old.

Some people find that they can go to these scenes without issue or fear of relapse, but that is rarely the case. It is tempting for those who crave the social scene of clubs and bars to minimize that voice that tells them it might not be the best idea to go back to their old haunts. Does a person who is new in addiction recovery have to risk their newfound sobriety to have fun and feel like part of the party? The new answer to this question is absolutely not! Sober bars are popping up all around and are the answer to this type of socialization in sobriety.

It’s no secret that people in recovery love their coffee, and you can rest assured that Starbucks is a frequented meeting spot, but is there more fun to be had?

Sober bars: the rising trend says, yes. While coffee is great, so other tasty non-alcoholic. Add some lights, a bar and stools, a stage with some live music, and a mixture of people set on having fun and staying clean and sober, and you have a party. This party scene is clean, where people don’t have to worry about getting drunk or high, or sick, or drugged and harmed. It’s also a place where you don’t have to interact with people who are intoxicated. This type of nightclub caters to a crowd that knows what they want and can network and support each other in their pursuit of a better life, free from the bondage of addiction. Some sober bars have billiards and darts, and even movie nights. Sober bars aren’t just for people recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. They are a place where individuals who have chosen not to drink or use fit right in and have the opportunity to socialize without fear of judgment for not following the ‘normal’ social cues.

Sober bars are likely to catch some momentum in the upcoming years.
