The American Society of Addiction Medicine states that Intensive Outpatient Treatment (IOP) should be a minimum of nine hours per week. The recommended minimum length of time for IOP is ninety days. Intensive Outpatient Therapy is often broken up into different focus sessions. Time may be spent in family therapy, lecture sessions, skills training, and individual counseling.
Outpatient care is flexible, having day sessions or evening sessions available, which works well with an individual’s personal life.
Some programs hold IOP sessions three days per week for two to four hours a day. Other IOP programs may only be sixty to ninety minutes per session. There are also treatment plans that require meeting five times per week. Although most treatment plans for IOP are for a length of ninety days, some can last longer depending upon individual needs.
Partial hospitalization is another outpatient option for drug treatment.
This type of program requires the individual to stay in the treatment facility throughout the day, but return home in the evening and weekends. This drug treatment plan can last anywhere from a few weeks to a few months.
