The length of treatment and what kind of outpatient that is needed depends on the severity of the addiction. Those with severe addictions may begin treatment in a residential facility and then be referred to outpatient as a relapse prevention therapy. For those individuals that do not need detox, outpatient may be good alternative to leaving their home and job for thirty to sixty days to enter a residential treatment plan.
The American Society of Addiction Medicine states that Intensive Outpatient Treatment (IOP) should be a minimum of nine hours per week. The recommended minimum length of time for IOP is ninety days. Intensive Outpatient Therapy is often broken up into different focus sessions. Time may be spent in family therapy, lecture sessions, skills training, and individual counseling.
Outpatient care is flexible, having day sessions or evening sessions available, which works well with an individual’s personal life.
Some programs hold IOP sessions three days per week for two to four hours a day. Other IOP programs may only be sixty to ninety minutes per session. There are also treatment plans that require meeting five times per week. Although most treatment plans for IOP are for a length of ninety days, some can last longer depending upon individual needs.
Partial hospitalization is another outpatient option for drug treatment.
This type of program requires the individual to stay in the treatment facility throughout the day, but return home in the evening and weekends. This drug treatment plan can last anywhere from a few weeks to a few months.
As many people in recovery discover, putting down the drink or the drug may be the easiest part.
All of the feelings and emotions that have been buried for a long time will come to surface once someone gets clean. When getting high or drunk is no longer an option to forget or numb the pain of past hurts, abandonments, betrayals, etc., a new way of coping has to be learned. Sometimes the past has been buried so deeply that individual therapy or counseling is helpful for the person to come to a balance and gain peace within themselves. Individual therapy/counseling can continue as long as the individual feels it is necessary and helpful.
Twelve step meetings are another addiction treatment plan that is known to work when someone practices honesty and works the steps.
Most people are a bit leery of meetings in the beginning, but come to find comfort and contentment in their lives once they get used to meetings being a part of their new, sober life. Addiction recovery is a life long process. Going to meetings does not have a time limit. Most people that have years of sobriety make meetings a part of their life for the long haul.
