Many treatment facilities offer a sober living program, while others provide referrals to sober living options. The concept for a sober living environment came about out of necessity. Individuals leaving a safe and structured residential program do not always have the ideal living situations to move back into. Furthermore, transitioning back into daily living while very new in recovery can be a difficult task. So what is a sober living environment like? Sober living environments are geared toward helping the individual who is in early recovery continue making a great start.

So, what is a sober living environment like?

SLE’s are typically houses, that several people share, or apartments that make up a sober living community. The typical length of stay in one of these facilities can be from a few months to a little more than a year. A sober living house is very different from a single-family house or regular apartment. In fact, you could compare a sober living home with a college dormitory, only with more rules and a strict no drinking and no drugging policy. Instead of having the school’s rules, there are house rules. Some of these rules will have to do with curfew, maintaining the cleanliness and appearance of the house, drug and alcohol testing, and some houses require a specific amount of AA or other 12-step meeting attendance. The cost of living in a SLE varies, depending on the facility, but most require that the residents work and pay rent.In addition to adding structure and support to a person’s situation in early recovery, sober living homes also provide an opportunity for individuals to get plugged into the recovery community and make lasting and positive friendships.
